Eric Whitehead Photography

Eric Whitehead Photography was established in 1983 after I left my staff newspaper job. I decided to start the business because I wanted to expand the scope of photography that I was covering at the time and also to work more in providing images for the national newspapers and media. Since that time the business has continued to expand. I cover Cumbria and The Lake District for all the UK national press. In my career I have provided photographs of 'hard news' events such as Lockerbie, through to 'soft news' and 'features' for magazines. My work soon expanded into public relations and corporate photography.

The business incorporates three aspects of my work: my editorial and corporate work; the picture library of snooker photography in 'Snookerimages'; and the images and photography of Cumbria and The Lake District in 'Cumbria Images'.

Snooker

In 1982 I had started to photograph snooker and established 'Snookerimages. This library is now the world's largest and most comprehensive collection of snooker images; a collection of photography on everything about snooker. The online searchable database of images from this collection can be viewed at snookerimages-pictures.com. During my work in snooker I have been the official photographer for World Snooker, the games governing body. The official photographer for Imperial Tobacco ( Embassy World Snooker Championship) and also photographer for their other title events. Official photographer for the Benson Hedges Masters in Wembley, working for Karen Earl.

Snooker photography was a challenge; working under difficult lighting conditions and trying to capture the action and personalities of the players. I used my editorial background in snooker; I was not a sports photographer and today still enjoy photographing the sport, after more than 24 years.

Cumbria Images

In 1989 I established 'Cumbria Picture LIbrary', a library of images covering all aspects of Cumbria and The Lake District. A lot of this work was used by Cumbria Tourist Board and The Lake District National Park, as well as national and international media. Complimenting my photographs in this library was work from over 20 photographers. This library has now been renamed 'Cumbria Images'. A title that I feel reflects todays advances in digital media and promotion. At present I am building a new website to display this collection. Career

Through the 30 years that I have been working, I have consistently provided images for a many varied clients. and continuing with my love of editorial photography I have worked for all the national newspapers.

The snooker photography has taken me all over the world; to tournaments in Europe, China, Thailand, Dubai and other countries. I have built up a library that is the world's number one source of snooker photography, during which I have worked for many clients, sponsors and media.

The photographs from Cumbria Images have been used in publishing, calendars; for editorial and feature articles, advertising and promotions.

Digital

Progressing from my background and training in film photography I welcomed the use of computers and digtial equipment and the skills in using Photoshop and outputting digital files and prints. I can professionally produce digital images and output them. It was a welcome relief from producing prints to deadline using enlargers in 'broom cupboards' to emailing them from computers. The time saved with this process means that I can concentrate more on producing the right photograph; which is what really matters at the end of the day.

Photography

I just love all photography, especially the excitement of competing against deadlines to get pictures to the desk in time and the challenge of producing exciting images from a variety of situations. I love meeting people and spending time to learn about their situation and using photography to portray this. I like to be unobtrusive and compassionate and to feel that in some way I am just recording a moment without changing or manipulating the environment.
